The perfect burger is one of the most divisive topics in the world of food. Sesame or brioche bun? Thick patties or smash patties? Hells, the debate over tomato sauce could go on for decades alone.
But I think we’re all in agreement that the perfect burger needs cheese. Which cheese, however, isn’t quite so easy to answer. So, we decided to rate and rank some of the most popular burgers cheeses – because why not?!
We’re interested in your opinions, so let us know what you think?
Monterey Jack – 9/10
‘Jack’ is a light cheese that melts perfectly with a great but subtle taste, meaning you can have lots of it without overpowering the meat and any other ingredients.
American – 8/10
American cheese is, as you can probably guess from its packaging, totally processed crap. I mean, it’s not really cheese. But that doesn’t stop it from being frickin’ awesome – far from it! American cheese is the most used cheese for burgers and it’s not hard to see why. It only narrowly missed the top spot because we felt that Monterey Jack’s flavour profile had the edge. That and the fact it’s not actually a cheese.
Gouda – 8/10
This naughty little dutch number is an often unrecognised burger cheese but it’s up there with the best. It’s super gooey and comes smoked or unsmoked.
Swiss – 7/10
Made famous by Tom and Jerry, Swiss cheese is has a deliciously complex flavour with lots of moister that means it’s great for melting. But make sure you buy good stuff from a deli rather than the cheap, packaged, processed stuff from supermarkets.
Cheddar – 6/10
The UK’s most popular cheese by far, it’s no surprise that cheddar is also a very popular burger cheese. Its high-fat content means it can separate and become oily when heated, but grating it or going for a mild version should help avoid this.
Blue – 6/10
Blue cheese is the strongest and most flavourful on the list, which makes it the most divisive. Go for a soft, creamy blue such as Saint Agure or Castello and slowly melt it on top of your burger.
Gruyere – 5/10
Gruyere is one of the key ingredients to fondue, so it is made for melting, making it a great burger cheese.
Brie – 2/10
Sorry, but no! Never brie on a burger. Stop it!
