Whilst these top 5 lists are not in any particular order, these Bristol chippy’s are some firm favourites of Foozie and we think them deserving of a shout out! If you are looking for inspiration for your next Friday night dinner then have a scroll…
Salt & Malt
Address: Chew Valley Lake & Cargo 2
For seriously good fish and chips, it has to be Salt and Malt. The restaurant from Josh Eggleton and team has nailed the classic chip shop meal using quality produce, as is always a theme with Josh’s restaurants. The shipping container restaurant in Cargo 2 operates as both a restaurant and takeaway, but for the real experience then you must visit the Chew Valley site. The nautical restaurant overlooks the sprawling lake and has beautiful views across the greenery. It’s a gorgeous spot for the summer sunshine months too.
Bishopston Fish Bar
Address: 264 Gloucester Road, Bristol BS7
The Bishopston Fish Bar has taken home quite a few awards in it’s time, not too bad for a local neighbourhood chippy. Bristolians love the place and it’s popularity looks set to continue with queues often lining up over the weekends for those wrapped up fish and chips. Bishopston has been recognised by those who know fish and chips across the country, so it is worth the trek up Gloucester Road to check them out.
Argus Fish Bar
Address: 114 West Street, Bristol BS3
If you are South of the river then you’ve just got to pay Argus’ Fish Bar a visit. The traditional chippy has got it all on the menu – including faggot and chips and COTTAGE PIE and chips = potato on potato baby. This is the best sort of ‘it’s Friday night and I can’t be bothered’ dinner. The portions are huge and cheap, and will definitely fill that fishy holed void in your tummy.
Address: 4a Gloucester Road, Bristol BS7
Fish, chips and soul food is the order of the day at Soulfish. The Southern inspired deep fried menu is the perfect accompaniment to a big portion of fish and chips – we are talking deep fried mac ‘n’ cheese bites, calamari and fried chicken wings. The Cajun salt adds a nice spicy kick to your chips and all of the homemade sauces are delicious, we particularly love dunking pieces of fried fish in their lemon mayonnaise.
Address: 38 College Green, Bristol BS1
Choose to grab and go from Catch 22 which is based at the bottom of Park Street or seat yourself upstairs in their restaurant. There are separate menus for those wishing to grab and go or if you want to make a night of it. All the fish and chip classics are on offer whilst the restaurant menu branches out more and gives you the option to indulge in some booze as well.
