When a cafe has been going strong for 8 years in the city of Bristol you know it has got to be well loved. That certainly seems to be the case for Cox and Baloney, which has a solid reputation for being one of the city’s quirkiest vintage tea rooms and private event spaces.

The owners, Joney and Amy (who have been friends for 20 years) started this business with £100 between them and a passion to do something they loved. Since then, the cafe has become well known for it’s wonderful afternoon tea setting, with homemade cakes and specially brewed teas which are produced by the ladies too.

Last week I was invited to enjoy afternoon tea with the ladies, and girls, if you are looking to go out for a treat, I would highly recommend it, as it was such a lovely way to spend a couple of hours over a lunchtime. That and because we spoke about butlers in the buff a lot and who doesn’t want to chat about half naked men? Or is that just me…

There is a menu of specially crafted teas created by Amy & Joney, and for £18 you get a stand full of finger sandwiches, large scones with all the trimmings and a selection of homemade cakes. If you have been to the tearoom before, you will know that the vintage decor lends itself to this kind of experience, with everything being served on beautiful china. There was a large party of ladies in at the same time who were celebrating a birthday so the atmosphere was fun and buzzy. I loved the dainty sandwiches and the ladies also offer mini afternoon tea for little ones which I thought was so cute and such a nice idea.

Cox & Baloney has undergone a bit of a revamp and rebrand in recent times. The cafe front has been painted black after for so long being a bright pink, and there are slight touches inside to cutlery and menus which make it a bit more modern. Although Joney and Amy love everything vintage (as this is what the tearoom is well known for), they are also aware of the notion to keep up with ever changing trends and the times, and this has helped them survive in a business where all so often we hear of businesses having to close.

In light of this, there are some exciting things coming up at Cox and Baloney, which offers so much more than just an afternoon tea destination. They now run a pudding club every Thursday, between 6 and 9pm. Pop in to enjoy three tea cup cocktails and a selection of desserts for just £16 (I mean, you can continue on the cocktails for as long as you like), and take in a different scenery than the standard thirsty Thursday after work drinks.

They have also just announced their fantastic bottomless prosecco afternoon tea, which as it sounds, is all the good stuff with added bubbles! It is the perfect excuse to get out with your best mate for an overdue catch up, get all the girls together or round up your Mum, Nan or neighbour and just take some time out to catch up and enjoy yourself. The first event falls on Mother’s Day which is the perfect excuse to treat her as well.

I’ve got a lot of time for Amy and Joney, they freely admitted that whilst at times this industry can be challenging, they’ve always come through any obstacles together and supported each other. They are both hard working mums, and their afternoon tea with me was the first one they’d ever sat down and had since only recently claiming their weekends back. They are both great examples of hard working, strong women, who have pursued a dream they both wanted to achieve. Their personality is dotted all over the venue, and they really want to offer a space for ladies (and gents!) to come and enjoy themselves. Watch out for exciting announcements coming up over the next few months, and be sure to get yourself down there and try a gin infused cocktail!
