We fell in love with Nutmeg from the night they first opened. This Clifton restaurant serves up some seriously dishes Indian cuisine inspired by owner Raja’s hometown and travels. Nutmeg’s ‘Menu 29’ is reflective of the 29 states in India and features a whole host of dishes from different parts of the country. Using only the best produce from Bristol’s local producers, Nutmeg have gained a delicious reputation and rightly so. Tasting menus are also available and Nutmeg often run fun and fantastic events. We love the slow cooked beef madras and the chicken biryani (which is presented wonderfully!)

If you have not visited Urban Tandoor before, then you must, if only to find out why they were recently voted the best Indian restaurant in the U.K. – which is fantastic news for the hard working team. You may well have bypassed this hidden gem which is tucked away on Small Street; the inside of the restaurant is in line with a traditional curry house, it is relaxed with friendly staff who cannot do enough for you. Chai Shai

Address: 4 Jacob Well’s Road, Bristol BS8

For a truly authentic taste of India, you must make a visit to Chai Shai. This small, unassuming restaurant offers honest Indian food in a friendly and relaxed setting. The family run venue makes for a warm welcome, and there is the option to sit within the small space or take away. The main courses might sound unfamiliar to those who are used to a curry house menu for example, but it is a wonderful opportunity to try cuisine or dishes you may not have encountered before. The homemade samosas and pakoras are just excellent too.

Award winning Raj Bari is a popular choice amongst Bristol locals who are after delicious Indian cuisine. Any restaurant who has perfected their own ‘secret’ spice mix has got to be applauded, and this is why the 20 year old restaurant is still going strong. The contemporary restaurant allows for a relaxed and informal atmosphere, which provides the perfect setting for an Indian feast.
