She Sells Sushi

Address: Various Bristol Markets

What started out as some home cooking for Lisa quickly turned into a full time business when her friends repeatedly told her that her sushi was delicious. Now she regularly pops up at Bristol’s wonderful markets, selling her sushi by individual pieces, or alongside speciality baos. Everything Lisa sources is from local suppliers which she centres her business around, especially in a dish as transparent as sushi.

Nomu

Address: 81 Whiteladies Road, Bristol BS8

Smart kitchen and cocktail bar Nomu on Whiteladies Road is a lovely hangout for a sushi spread dinner with friends. It’s relaxed and the staff are more than welcoming, it just has a really nice vibe. Sushi is the kind of food you can pick at during conversation and the menu here offers plenty of delicious options; we love the mixed Sashimi and the shredded duck pieces. Nomu also serve tasty cocktails, so if you are wanting to extend your night further, you can also get in the mood with a few drinks.

Bento Boss

Address: 6 Whiteladies Road, Bristol BS8

Also a resident of Whiteladies Road, Bento Boss is a stylish and buzzy hangout with a wide selection of sushi dishes to choose from. This restaurant has flourished albeit being in a bit of a challenging location, and that is testament to the authentic and delicious cooking that is made here. We’d highly recommend sampling the set menu here, which at £25pp is a steal and lets you try a whole selection of great dishes.

This pint sized, modest restaurant focuses on selling classic and quality sushi. The team here have have worked hard to bring Bristol not only authentic Japanese food, but also a service and atmosphere that you could only otherwise get in Japan. The Yume website claims that those who are ‘homesick for Japan’ will be able to satisfy their cravings here. The menu ranges from an extremely healthy and traditional home-cooked dish, ‘kinpira gobo’ burdock root & carrots braised in soy sauce and sweet sake, to chicken teriyaki, sweet soy sauce glazed, tender and juicy free-range chicken.

Obento

Address: 69 Baldwin Street, Bristol BS1

You’ve got to admire a restaurant that started out as a 40 seater venue but due to popularity has expanded to over two floors and 150 seats. Obento caters for all occasions, whether that is a special party, a private dinner or a more relaxed catch up with friends. Obento aims to bring an authentic taste of Japan to the city of Bristol and wants customers to experience the true taste and meaning of Japanese dishes. If you are feeling particularly brave (or have had too make Sake) then you might also want to test out their karaoke rooms!
